Coaching App Cost in India: What You’ll Actually Pay Over 3 Years

The short answer

Launching a coaching app in India usually costs:

  • ₹0–₹25,000 on a pay-per-sale app builder, plus about 5% of every sale
  • About ₹30,000 a year on a flat-fee app builder
  • ₹2–8 lakh or more to build your own app with an agency (commonly quoted estimates)

But the launch price is the small part. Two costs keep growing as your institute grows: video (every hour your students watch costs money to deliver) and payment fees (about 2.36% of every online sale at Razorpay’s standard rate of 2% + GST).

So the real question is not “how much is the app?” It is “what will this cost me each year as I grow?”

Your three options

A yearly fee or 4–5% of sales, plus add-ons

Small institutes going online for the first time

What it looks like over 3 years

Take a mid-sized institute: 1,000 online students, ₹50 lakh online sales a year, each student watching 15 hours of video a month.

  • Payment gateway: about ₹1.2 lakh a year, or ₹3.5 lakh over 3 years. You pay this on every option.
  • 5% revenue-share app: about ₹3 lakh a year including GST on the fee, or ₹8.9 lakh over 3 years. It rises every year your sales grow.
  • Your own app: video delivery alone could cost ₹40,000 to ₹1.2 lakh a month — before you pay a single developer.

A simple rule of thumb:

  • Small institute: an app builder is almost always cheaper than building.
  • Mid-sized institute: compare a fixed or tiered plan against a revenue share. The pricing model starts to matter more than the price.
  • Large institute: video and payment costs matter more than any app feature.

Why video is the cost to watch

You can estimate your video usage in one line:

Students × hours watched per month × GB per hour = data delivered per month

Recorded lectures typically use about 0.3–0.7 GB per hour, depending on video quality. So 1,000 students watching 15 hours each comes to roughly 4.5–10.5 TB a month. Better video compression can cut that bill nearly in half.

If a plan promises “unlimited video”, ask three things in writing:

  1. Is there a fair-use limit?
  2. What video quality do students get?
  3. Is DRM included?

DRM (digital rights management) locks your videos so only your app can play them. It makes downloading and screen-recording much harder. A watermark with the student’s name or phone number helps you trace any leak.

Costs people forget

  • Extra video beyond your plan’s limit, especially in exam season
  • Payment gateway fees — about 2.36% of every sale
  • 18% GST on platform fees — usually claimable as input credit; check with your CA
  • Google and Apple rules if students buy courses inside the app, which can add store fees
  • Renewal prices and discounts that require paying 2–3 years upfront
  • Paid add-ons such as live-class credits or premium features
  • SMS, OTP and WhatsApp messages
  • The cost of leaving if your app and data stay with the vendor

Who owns your app?

This decides how hard it is to switch later. Before you sign, ask:

  1. Is the app published under my Play Store and App Store account, or the vendor’s?
  2. If I leave, can I take my students, test results and videos with me?

If the app belongs to the vendor, leaving means asking every student to download a new app.

Which option should you choose?

  • Just starting, or small online sales: a pay-per-sale app builder.
  • Small to mid-sized, simple needs, low piracy risk: a flat-fee app builder.
  • Tests and recorded lectures are your main product, and you plan to grow: an LMS or exam platform.
  • Your own tech team and very specific needs: a custom build.

Where Testpress fits

Testpress is built for exam-prep institutes. It gives you branded web, Android and iOS apps; online tests with question banks and multilingual exams; DRM-protected, watermarked video through TPStreams; live classes through Zoom; and AI proctoring for important tests.

If you are a single teacher just testing whether students will pay, a pay-per-sale builder is a cheaper place to start. Testpress fits best once you run several batches, hold regular mock tests and have content worth protecting. Pricing depends on your number of students and how much video they watch, so we share a quote based on your numbers.

5 questions to ask before you sign

  1. What will I pay in year 1, 2 and 3 — and if my students double?
  2. How much video is included, and what does extra cost?
  3. Is DRM included?
  4. Whose account is the app published under?
  5. What can I take with me if I leave?

FAQs

How much does a coaching app cost in India?

From ₹0 on a pay-per-sale builder to ₹2–8 lakh or more for a custom build. Over three years, video, payment fees and any revenue share usually cost more than the launch itself.

What is the cheapest way to start?

A pay-per-sale app builder. You pay a small one-time fee and about 5% of each sale. It stays cheapest while your online sales are small.

Can I launch a coaching app without hiring developers?

Yes. App builders and LMS platforms let you launch a branded app without writing any code.
